Fighting between rival Haitian gangs in one of Port-au-Prince's most violent slums forced the closure of a hospital on November 17, 2023, according to the medical non-governmental group Doctors Without Borders. The killing earlier this week of a leader of the coalition of gangs known as G9 sparked a new cycle of violence in Cite Soleil, the country's largest slum. The emergency hospital run by MSF in Cite Soleil "is currently the only functioning medical facility in the area after the recent closure of the Fontaine Hospital for an indefinite period," MSF said in a statement.
